A home is a place of residence or refuge and comfort. It is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest and be able to store personal property. Most modern-day households contain sanitary facilities and a means of preparing food. Animals have their own homes as well, either living in the wild or in a domesticated environment. As an alternative to the definition of "home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition--instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort.

There are certain cultures in which members lack permanent homes, such as with nomadic people.

Ending a home based business - what are the tax implications?
Q. I've been writing off my home based business for the last few years. If I stop using that portion of my home solely for my business, how do I indicate that on my taxes? Additionally, does anyone know of any resources that indicate what the implications are of stopping a home based business write-off? I see lots of information on how/what to write-off for a home based business, but can't seem to find anything on what to do when that ends.

A. You don't show on your tax that you ended the business, but keep track of the depreciation allowed or allowable while you were claiming the home office deduction - you'll need that number when you sell the house.

Can a home seller help a home buyer with a down payment by paying rent?
Q. Normally, if a home seller helps a home buyer with a down payment, the bank wants to know about it, and will count it against the home buyer when approving the mortgage. But what if the home seller agrees to rent the house back from the home buyer, and pay the rent in advance? Is that a loophole that lets a home seller help a home buyer with the down payment without having the bank count it against the home buyer when approving the mortgage?

A. No, I assure you this scenario wouldn't even be submitted to the mortgage underwriter. It just doesn't fit. If anything, it makes it worse because once you say "rent" will be paid and it's a single family home, the purchase becomes an investment property and all the rules change. Very difficult to come up with scenarios like this to fool the experienced underwriter who's job is on the line. She's going to weed through every crack in the file. If you have funds you can give a buyer, then the buyer should get an FHA mortgage where gift funds are allowed - depending on who is giving the gift. If the buyer needs more than a seller credit for closing costs and a gift for the down payment, then perhaps it's not the right time for him/her… [cont.]

How much does it take run a home based business?
Q. Like if you run a business as one person. You already have all the things you need right at home to get your business started like office space and equipment. Compared to running a business outside your home. Are home businesses and businesses outside the home equally as hard to run? Seeing that you have all the equipment and work space at home along with your skills to market to customers, how much more do you need to put into running a business from home?

  • Sitting with my gin or whisky afterwards I would often manage to get into conversation with some lonely man or other – usually an exile like myself – and the talk would be about the world, air-routes and shipping-lines, drinking-places thousands of miles away. Then I felt happy, felt I had come home, because home to people like me is not a place but all places, all places except the one we happen to be in at the moment.
