A home is a place of residence or refuge and comfort. It is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest and be able to store personal property. Most modern-day households contain sanitary facilities and a means of preparing food. Animals have their own homes as well, either living in the wild or in a domesticated environment. As an alternative to the definition of "home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition--instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort.

There are certain cultures in which members lack permanent homes, such as with nomadic people.

2nd Home is it better to get an equity Loan to purchase or a 1st mortgage?
Q. We own our house fully No mortgage value approx $550k. We are thinking that we like to retire early to near the beach. Currently we found nice homes with land in that area for $175k. Is it better to get a home equity for the full cost of the Beach home plus any other small debit (approx $75k 2 cars and a timeshare) or continue to pay on the individual debits and add a Mortgage for the Beach house? The ultimate goal would be to get settled into the 2nd home and then sell the current home pay off the balance and then put the rest in an investment with monthly dividends to use as retirement income until we reach retirement age and also maybe get a parttime job.

A. I am a mtg broker. I would do a fixed HELOC and combine all your debt into it. If you pay all your debt separate, you are paying interest on the cars, credit cards, etc which are NOT tax deductible. Your mtg debt is. Congrats on having your home free and clear!

When a home is badly damaged by fire, do insirance companies pay for a new home elsewhere, or must you do reno?
Q. A neighbor of mine had their home severly damaged by fire recently, and I am just wondering... in such cases, can you just take the insurance money and buy a new home? Or do you need to restore the house that was damaged? The house this person lives in is also their business, if that has any bearing on things.

A. I think it varies a lot depending on your policy. But with a business, I would think they would want to see you restore what you already had.

What are the steps involved in buying a home?
Q. My family's home was destroyed by a tornado last week. It was a family home frome previous generations - paid for. Neither my husband nor I have ever bought a home before. We both rented before living in the now gone home. It's in the country. We have the deed to the land the old home was on. What are the steps we need to go through to get a home? We will need a deep well, septic tank, bank loan, everything. Where do we go to know what to do first - bank first or call the well-driller and septic tank person? We really don't know which way to get started. We are hoping to be able to get a double wide mobile home to put on this land. The land is only one acre. Unfortunately we have no insurance. The home we were in was an older… [cont.]

A. The first thing to do is decide if you are going to buy an existing home or have one built on the land you own. If you are buying an existing home you will need to obtain financing through a bank or mortgage company. Get pre-approved before looking for the home.Find a REALTOR that you are comfortable working with. Be sure to have the purchase of the home contingent on it passing an inspection. If you will be building a home on the land you will still need to obtain the financing to construct the house. Before getting the loan you will need to find a REALTOR who works with new construction and have them help you find the builder for you. I could go much further but this will set you on the right path.

Then I felt happy, felt I had come home, because home to people like me is not a place but all places, all places except the one we happen to be in at the moment.
