What are some tourist destinations within 600 miles of Bismarck, ND?
Q. What are some tourist destinations within 600 miles of Bismarck, ND? Please don't mention Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, the Black Hills, Minneapolis, and Sioux Falls, as I have been to those places. Or Glacier National Park, as I planned to go there, but there aren't any hotel rooms remaining. Canada is fine. I forgot to say I've been to Medora/Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the International Peace Garden. Really if it's in North Dakota, don't suggest it, because I've probably either been there or don't want to go there.

A. Duluth, MN is nice. In or within a short drive of Duluth is the Split Rock Lighthouse, Glensheen Mansion, Canal Park (with great restaurants), and you can watch ships come in at the lift bridge. In the winter, there are a couple of nice ski resorts in the area--Lutsen (farther North) and Spirit Mtn in Duluth. The whole area around Lake Superior is a great place to vacation.

How bad are I 90 and I 94 between Livingston MT and Bismarck ND in the winter?
Q. I'm going for a job interview next week in Bismarck, and my family lives just south of Livingston. This will only work if I can come home to see the family every two or three weeks. It looks like no mountain passes between here and there, and they try to keep the Interstates clear for all the truck traffic, so anything else I should know/think of? (Besides winter car kit) thanks!

A. oooh i have definitely driven a portion of that stretch of 94 many many times in the winter... most of the trouble i've encoutered is with slush and ice, they will slow you down quite a bit. there aren't really many gas stations between here and there, so i would gas up every chance you get. keep some antifreeze in your car, and use it. make sure that winter survival kit has everything that you could ever imagine needing, and also keep plenty of blankets, a shovel, and some jumper cables in your car. i hope you're driving a vehicle that's ND/MT winter appropriate! :) most importantly, just slooow down.

A. By forming a coomplicates set of treaties that included all european powers in a system of check and balance because of the threat of a total war in case one country attacked another (exactly that was the reason for ww I). In addition he made sure everybody was everbodies ally in a least one treaty and thus the networks of treaties were so complicated that he made defacto sure every country had a peace agreement and interrest in keeping peace with every other country. In addition he made the King built up a propper and modern army and developed good battle plans against the most likly opponent France.

A. Rather than go through a standard answer, which has already been covered here in many ways, let me just do it a little differently: Through the first half of the nineteenth century, the Prussian state, traditionally Protestant, overwhelmingly rural, with its Spartan military tradition, nevertheless remained inferior to Austria in one essential ingredient of national power: population. In 1815, there were 10 million Prussians, compared to 30 million Frenchmen and 30 million subjects of the Austrian emperor. Through the first half of the 19th century, the drive towards German unification gained momentum, speeded by the growth of industry and railways. In 1834, a Prussian-organized customs union (the Zollverein) lowered tariff barriers; in… [cont.]

A. Kaiser Wilhelm II. was responsible only to himself. He was a monarch. Otto von Bismarck was his servant in Government. Kaiser Wilhelm caused tremendous harm to the German People, he was a war monger and so full of him self. He never had to face the music for his actions, after Germany lost WWI he lived happily and very well in exile in Holland.

A. Some historians see Germany during the late 19th Century as following on a 'special parth' in which instead of industralisation leading to liberal democracy as it did in Britain and U.S, instead Germany remained essentially autocratic and hierarchical society with liberal democracy submerged beneath the nationalism and militarism of the Junker class - the wealthly landed elites of society. To understand the impact of nationalism on liberalism, you have to understand the nature of nationalism, in which there is a strong identification with the nation, which borders on paranoia, hysteria and xenophobia as the historical, cultural, political and religious symbols of the nation are put above other identifications of belonging to the nation. … [cont.]

A. The concluding part of the speech is: "The position of Prussia in Germany will not be determined by its liberalism but by its power. Prussia must concentrate its strength and hold it for the favourable moment, which has already come and gone several times. Since the treaties of Vienna, our frontiers have been ill-designed for a healthy body politic. Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided - that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849 - but by iron and blood." Not "blood and iron", notice. In principle, he was saying that the future of the new Germany would lie with industry (iron) and ethnicity (blood). Prussia, in particular, he believed should lead the unification because of its… [cont.]

Also William had a close relationship with Great Britain and was will liked by the British Royal family. Prussia enjoyed England's support. Power in Europe was shift, the Crimea, Austria's defeat in Italy, Denmark's weakening stated made the Germany Confederation Strong. THe Germany Confederation had met before and failed to unite largely due to external influences and the argument over who would be Kaiser. A. They should be inspected and photographed in the name of history. Maybe a few artifacts raised for display nonprofit. But the main wreckage and any bodies should be left in peace. There is nothing wrong with photographing a war cemetery and taking artifacts from a battlefield... But no one digs up the graves. There is value in this because the wreckage often shows what really happened in a battle and what is myth and fact. Keep in mind these are not just war graves they are the remains of famous battles...Documention by eye witness, even modern times is usually faulty. Even photographs can be misleading depending on the attitude and angle they were made at as well as how good visibility was...and war dead are not always respected. I… [cont.]
